Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding Fiber

What is Santa Rosa Fiber?

Santa Rosa Fiber is an exciting project to bring Fiber-to-the Home (FTTH) technology to homes and businesses in Vernon, Texas. This fiber technology will enable Santa Rosa Communications customers to access services including ultra-fast internet. During the fiber installation process, Santa Rosa Communications will construct a network of fiber-optic cables which use light instead of electricity to carry a digital data signal.

What does Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) mean?

Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) is the broadband delivery model that extends fiber-optic cables all the way to the home or business. It is sometimes referred to as Fiber-to-the Premise (FTTP).

How will a fiber connection benefit me?

A fiber connection will provide you with access to virtually unlimited bandwidth capacity and internet speed, enabling you to enjoy a better experience with data-intensive applications such as streaming, online gaming, cloud storage, online education, and more. Fiber also increases service reliability and stability.

In addition, having FTTH can increase the value of a home by several thousand dollars and increase the amount renters are willing to pay.

What is fiber and why is it better than what I have?

Fiber-optic cables contain optical fiber, which are hair-thin strands of glass specially designed to trap and transmit light pulses. Unlike copper, optical fiber can carry data for great distances without signal loss or interference. Optical fiber can also transmit signals in both directions simultaneously — upload and download at extremely high speeds.

Is this the first time Santa Rosa Communications has provided fiber to homes and businesses?

Actually, Santa Rosa Communications first started deploying Fiber-to-the-Home back in 2005 in Haskell, Texas and has continued to deploy Fiber-to-the-Home since then. We have been an innovative technology leader in this area for more than a decade.

Interest Phase and Pre-Registration / Sign Up Phase

Is there an obligation to purchase fiber services for my home or business if I express interest initially by signing up at SantaRosaFiber.com?

No. The interest form on our site is merely a tool for us to identify which neighborhoods have the highest interest in fiber coming into the area. You are not committing to the purchase of fiber services from Santa Rosa Communications.

What is the process for getting fiber to my home or business?

Santa Rosa Communications will schedule the order of fiber installation in Vernon neighborhoods based on the level of interest expressed by residents. The program is called “Band Together for Fiber.”

The first step is sign up. Once enough interest is shown within a neighborhood, we’ll start the Pre-Registration phase to determine the level of commitment within the neighborhood. If there is sufficient interest in a neighborhood, we’ll schedule the construction process in that neighborhood (soon to be Fiberhood Zone). We encourage anyone that is interested in Fiber-to-the-Home service to discuss the benefits with their friends and neighbors. Zones that do not show significant interest may not be constructed.

Why is there a Pre-Registration process?

Santa Rosa Communications’ goal is to build out the areas of Vernon where there is the most interest in fiber. The general rule — the more interest a Fiberhood Zone has in obtaining fiber, the sooner fiber will be deployed. Pre-Registration helps determine how many households and businesses are interested in taking advantage of fiber. If there is not significant interest in a zone, fiber may not be constructed there. This is the reason for neighbors to “Band Together for Fiber.”

Why is a $15 deposit required during Pre-Registration?

The Pre-Registration deposit of $15 shows a level of commitment on the part of our customers. Santa Rosa Communications will apply the $15 toward the first month’s bill after the fiber connection is completed. We’ll refund the $15 if we do not proceed with a fiber build in your neighborhood. The $15 Pre-Registration deposit is nonrefundable if the Fiberhood build occurs and service is not taken. Once a Fiberhood Zone is selected for the fiber build, Pre-Registration qualifies the homeowner or business to receive our standard installation FREE – over a $300 value.

Is there a Pre-Registration deadline?

The Pre-Registration phase will remain open until construction is completed in your neighborhood zone. We encourage everyone to register as soon as possible as neighborhood interest will drive priorities on the construction process. By pre-registering, you’ll also get the standard installation for FREE — – over a $300 value

Installation Phase

Will I be charged for installation of fiber to my home or business?

While crews are in your area, Santa Rosa Communications will cover the cost of construction up to your premises with installation of a (NID) Network Interface Device in your home or business — you will not be charged. However, if you do not pre-register and decide later that you want fiber (after the crews have left your area), there will be an installation charge. This is why it makes sense to act now. The included standard installation is over a $300 value.

Why is the fiber network buried underground?

Buried fiber is protected from elements such as fire, windstorms, and ice-storms. It provides a much more reliable network for our customers.

Will the process of burying fiber disturb my yard or property?

We’ll do everything we can to make sure to minimize any disturbance and will promptly restore your property as close to its original condition.

What equipment will be installed on my home or business?

We’ll install a Network Interface Device (NID) on the outside of your home or business, a fiber jack, and an optical network terminal (ONT). The ONT contains electronics that terminate the fiber-optic cable and converts the signals of light back into usable internet and telephone signals. The ONT can optionally include basic Wi-Fi or simply hand off internet to a personal router.

Internet and Phone Services

What communications services will be available to homes and businesses following the Santa Rosa Communications fiber build in Vernon?

Santa Rosa Communications will immediately offer internet and phone services, which allow you to keep your current phone number. We will have initial offerings for residential customers up to 1 Gbps. Businesses will have access to speeds up to 10 Gbps+ and local fiber interconnection.

If I sign up for internet service with Santa Rosa Communications, do I have to use an assigned Santa Rosa Communications email address for my personal email address?

No. We will not assign email addresses to our customers. You can continue to use one of the many free email services available (i.e. Gmail, Yahoo, etc.).

If I switch my telephone service to Santa Rosa Communications, will I be able to keep my same home or business phone number?

Absolutely! We’ll handle the details of transferring your current phone number. Once the number is moved, your current provider will automatically be notified so they will stop billing you for the service.

How fast can internet speeds be for my home or business on a fiber connection?

A fiber connection can provide virtually unlimited internet speeds. Santa Rosa Communications will have initial offerings of speeds up to 1 Gbps for residential customers and speeds up to 10 Gbps+ for business customers. To put that in context, an internet speed of 1 Gbps is equal to 1,000 Mbps. So if you currently have an internet plan with 20 Mbps speed — about average for a U.S. household — 1 Gbps would be 50 times faster!

Am I able to get phone service via fiber to my home or business but not subscribe to internet service?

Yes, you may obtain phone servicer from Santa Rosa Communications without obtaining internet.
